Creamed Pearl Onions and Peas


½ cup frozen pearl onions

1 cup frozen peas

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp flour

½ tsp sugar

¼ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

½ cup milk

2 tbsp Parmesan cheese (optional)



Simmer pearl onions in water for 5 minutes. Drain.

Melt butter in a saute pan. Add onions and saute for 3 minutes.

Add peas and saute for 1 minute.

Add flour, sugar, salt and pepper. Stir until well combined with butter.

Gradually add milk, stirring constantly, and simmer until sauce has thickened (1-2 minutes).

Add Parmesan, if desired. Serve hot.

3 servings, 174 calories per serving

    1. Thank you for taking the time to look through my recipes.  One of the big reasons for my starting this site is because I love to try new things as well as make adjustments to some of the recipes I see.  I wanted a place to share these ideas and encourage creativity!  

  2. This dish might encourage my kids to eat vegetables. I have tried to serve them vegetables in all sorts of ways, and I am always open to try new ways. I think I would choose to add the cheese to the mixture because we all like cheesy dishes and it would make the creamy dish more exciting. Thank you for this new method of preparing peas.

    1. This would certainly work well with cheese.  I have used a lot of different ways to get my kids to eat their veggies and cheese is always a winner!!  Good luck!

  3. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. It looks delicious and I love foods which contains beans. They are very high in Fiber and Proteins. Peas are delicious as well and liked the way you are preparing it. 

    Us, we cook it like soup and serve it with bread and some other raw vegetables.

  4. This seems like a tasty recipe for creamed pearl onions and peas. Do I need to defrost the onions and peas first or do I cook it from frozen?

    I do not like to add any sugar to vegetable recipes, combination of unwanted calories and I think veggies have enough taste without adding sugar. So how essential is sugar for this recipe?

    1. The pearl onions are simmered for 5 minutes beforehand but the peas are used from their frozen state.  As for the sugar, it would be fine to leave it out.

    but I also love eating onions and opinions has always been a staple
    in most of my food servings. I have never tried pearl onions before,
    actually I have never heard of them until now. I will definitely
    add this to my recipe book and try it out soon! Thanks 🙂

    1. I buy my pearl onions from the frozen food section.  I don’t recall ever having seen them being sold fresh.  If you can’t find them, I’m sure it would be equally good with chopped onion.
