Homemade Ranch Dressing /Dip

No need to run to the store for a packet of ranch dressing mix. You probably have all the ingredients for this homemade ranch dressing /dip right in your kitchen!

Homemade Ranch Dressing /Dip Mix


3 Tbsp dried parsley

1½ tsp black pepper

4½ tsp garlic powder

¾ tsp salt

4½ tsp onion powder

2 tbsp dill weed


Combine all ingredients in a tightly sealed container and shake to mix.

For dressing: Combine 1 tsp mix with ¼ cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup milk (or buttermilk), 3 tbsp sour cream and 1 ½ tsp lemon juice. 4 servings, 85 calories per serving.  Store tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.

In recipes: Substitute 1 tbsp mix for 1 packet of ranch mix.

    I make everything from scratch and especially marinades and dressings because the bottled stuff is so bad for you! I will definitely try your ranch dressing dip. It looks and sounds delicious.

  2. Hey nice article you have there. Wow what a coincidence, I just made one today, your steps is quite simplified. Nevertheless, it is pertinent to note that the ranch dressing recipe should last for about one week in the refrigerator. The ability for you to use fresh ingredients will  guarantee the dressing of lasting longer once it’s made.

  3. Wow, I had no idea it was so easy to make your own ranch dressing at home. I’ve got so many of my own recipes that I want to try this on, I can’t wait to cook something special this weekend. Have you tried this yourself? I’m prone to messing up on the first try so I wanted to know of any first-timer tips?

    1. I love ranch dressing so, yes, I have made this myself.  I would suggest that you just make according to the measurements that I have in the recipe and then adjust any flavorings as you see fit.  Let me know how it goes for you!

  4. Hi Cynthia. My kids love ranch dressing and I have tried making it before but something did not taste right. They ate it anyway, but I have not tried it since that day. Looking at your recipe, it seems like my proportions were not right and the ingredients needed revision. Garlic and parsley would certainly improve the taste of my dressing.     Love this one, as you mentioned I have all of that in my fridge right now! I had tried something different a while ago for a low-fat high protein alternative to the regular sour cream and mayo. It turned out terribly and I was curious if maybe you had a suggestion for me 🙂

    I took a pack of rach dressing and combined it with plain greek yogurt. I do the plain greek yogurt in my tacos and fajitas and never notice the difference so I figured it wouldn’t hurt that much. It was awful! 

    Would you have a recipe that is low fat and high protein as an alternative to some of the higher fat recipes for ranch dressing?

I’m surprised that the yogurt didn’t taste good…I thought that was the “go-to” for healthier dressing.  🙁  I have a trick that I’ve used when I’m trying to cut down on the calories from dressing:  Put your dressing on the side and simply dip your fork in it before stabbing some salad.  It works great!
